Giving Your Maltese Medicines

horizontal rule

Liquids: With the head of your Maltese angled upward, pull out the bottom lip at the side of the muzzle to form a pouch and pour the medicine slowly -- too fast and the dog may chock. Using a syringe is often easier than a spoon.

Pills: First place one hand over the upper jaw of your Maltese, and with your thumb and fingers on either side, open the mouth by pressing gently. With the other hand pull down the lower jaw, then place the pill well back on the tongue. Close the jaws, lift the head slightly and wait for the dog to sallow -- stroking the throat may help speed this up. If this does not work you can also place the pill in a small piece of meat or cheese. Just make sure the dog does not eat the treat and spit out the pill.
